What Happens at a Wedding Hair Trial & Is It Worth It?

Spoiler: It’s a Game-Changer

Hello, gorgeous! I’m Alice, your go-to wedding hair specialist, and today we’re talking about one of the most important (and often overlooked) parts of your bridal prep: the hair trial. Is it worth it? Short answer: Absolutely. Long answer? Keep reading, because I’m about to break it all down for you.

What Even Is a Bridal Hair Trial?

Think of it as your hair’s dress rehearsal. It’s the first time we meet, and it’s my chance to get to know your natural hair, hear about your dream style, and bring it to life. I usually recommend booking your trial about 2 months before your wedding day—by then, you’ve hopefully chosen your dress and accessories, and you’re ready to dive into the fun part: making your dream look, come true.

Before your trial, I’ll send you my Bridal Hair eBook, a little discovery journey I created to help you find the right words for the look you’ve been picturing in your mind (you know, the one you’ve been low-key obsessing over on Pinterest). Once we’ve set a date, I’ll share my number so we can brainstorm ideas and most importantly inspiration pictures over WhatsApp. I’m here for you, and I aim to reply to all messages within 24 hours.

What Happens During the Trial?

Your trial takes place at my cozy wedding hair studio in Wilford, Nottingham (yes, there’s parking, and no, it won’t take more than 2 hours of your life). Payment is due in advance, and on the day, we’ll finally meet face-to-face. This is where the magic begins, darling.

You’re welcome to bring one or two people for moral support (or to join in on the fun with their own trials—just let me know in advance). But remember, this day is about you. We’re here to create your dream look, not host a girls’ day out.

Is It Worth It? Let’s Get Real.

Here’s the tea: A hair trial isn’t mandatory, but it’s a game-changer. I’ve seen it all—brides who skip the trial to save a few bucks, only to panic as the wedding day approaches. Maybe they’ve chosen a style they’ve never tried before, or maybe they’re just stressed and second-guessing everything. Suddenly, they’re scrambling to book a last-minute trial, and guess what? I might not be available.

From a professional standpoint, I can’t guarantee a style will work for you until I’ve tried it at least once. Your hair type, texture, and length all play a role, and there’s no shortcut to getting it right. So, are you ready to risk it on your big day? I’m not.

What to Expect on the Day

Here’s your cheat sheet for a flawless trial experience:

  1. Come with clean, dry hair. Ideally washed the day before, but if you’ve got a greasy scalp, washing it the morning of is fine.

  2. Wear a white top (straps or off-the-shoulder styles work best) to mimic your wedding gown vibes. Bring a cardigan if it’s chilly.

  3. Bring your veil or hair accessories if you’ve got them. Don’t have them yet? No worries—I’ve got samples you can try, and I can recommend where to buy the perfect pieces.

  4. Do your homework. Bring inspo photos that match your hair color and length. And don’t forget to think about the front of your hair—it’s just as important as the back!

  5. If I’m styling your bridal party, bring pics of their desired looks and info on their hair type and length. This helps me plan timings for the big day.

  6. I’ll take a few photos for my notes (and possibly for my social media/website—let me know if you’re not cool with that).

  7. Tell me about any allergies or sensitivities—for you or your bridal party. We’re here to make you look stunning, not itchy.

What Not to Do at Your Hair Trial

Let’s keep it real: Your trial isn’t a hangout session with your entire bridal squad. Yes, it’s fun to bring a friend or two for support, but this day is about you. Bringing your whole entourage (we’re talking bridesmaids, moms, and everyone in between) can be distracting and take the focus off your vision.

As much as I’d love to style everyone at once, my priority is making sure you feel confident and beautiful. So, keep the guest list short and sweet.

And while we’re at it, here are a few more don’ts to keep in mind:

  • Don’t be late. I allocate 2 hours for your trial, and I won’t be able to go over that time. Punctuality is key, queen.

  • Don’t book your trial a year in advance. Seriously, don’t. You won’t have enough details about your dress, accessories, hair color, or even your haircut yet. Let’s make the most of your trial by having all the info we need—not just testing my skills for fun. (Spoiler: You can trust my expertise.)

  • Don’t postpone last minute. Life happens, but if you cancel or reschedule too close to your appointment, I might have to charge you again. Let’s avoid that awkwardness, yeah?
